Jayachitta

Jayachitta has been a Buddhist since 1981 and has lived and worked with other Buddhists for a lot of that time. She has a deep love of performance and the infinity of human expression. 2002-4 she trained in physical theatre at Kiklos Scuola in Italy.

Since then she trained in Improvisation with Andrew Morrish, John Britton, Kate Hilder and others. Improvisation, movement and exploring the clown are very important to her as additional approaches to the spiritual life, as they are based in physical expression and play.

She sees them as an interactive way of entering and exploring the space that one discovers in meditation. It's in that spirit of play that we can discover who we are and can be. Find out more on her website here

Wild open heart: metta, movement and meditation

-
Retreat Type:
Introductory

How do we consider our heart, our mind? Do we see it as a garden that needs careful trimming, cultivation and keeping in check? Or is it more like an open space with room for everything and everyone – more like a wilderness, unpredictable, fresh and full of discoveries?

To have an open heart is a beautiful idea – but is it naïve? Can we keep our heart open, in this world
that so often seems to be hard, rough, or full of pain? With the practice of the Metta Bhavana – of loving kindness – we engage with all we meet in the world with an ever-expanding openness. The practice invites us to shed the covers of our habitual identities, and to be present and alive to the world as we meet it. Do we dare enter the thrilling wilderness that is our own heart?

This retreat will focus on metta, and explore the stages of the Metta Bhavana in our heart, mind and bodies, in meditation, in nature and in the way we relate to one another. Practicing in- and outdoors, we will research how we can trust what is wild and surprising in ourselves, the mind-heart in its natural state.

Easy physical improvisational exercises will help us to become more present, and open to more light and joy. This will enrich our attention within and outside of meditation with the spirit of discovery. In meditation and in movement improvisation we enter the unknown, a dance with ever new experience. Joining this dance, we can discover where stillness and engagement meet.

living with uncertainty: exploring the bardos

-
Retreat Type:
Introductory

At times like these we might find ourselves with some uncertainty about ourselves and about the world. Everything around us seems to be shifting: structures of society, political directions of countries, and values that seemed to be long-established and firmly rooted. In this time, when solid ground seems scarce, we can look together at in-between states.

Who, and how, are we on shifting grounds? Who is ‘me’ when I do not recognize myself anymore? Tibetan tradition calls these experiences of in-between times, of gaps and transitions, ‘bardos’. Bardos describe what happens after our physical death, and the teachings are also concerned with impermanence, as we can observe it both in life and in death.

Taking the verses of the Six Bardos from the Tibetan Book of the Dead as a basis, we will explore how we experience moments of transition, in everyday life, in interaction and in meditation. We will look at themes like: How to be with loss? What happens when the old (me) dies? Who is this ‘I’ that is present, even when identity is absent?

Easy physical improvisational exercises will help us to become more present, and open to more light and joy. This will enrich our attention within and outside of meditation with the spirit of discovery. On this retreat we will apply what we notice in the physical experience straight to our meditation.

This retreat is suitable for complete beginners to meditation as well as being an ideal refresher for those who already have some experience. No experience of movement is required, only a willingness to explore your experience of movement in the body you are living in. For more information, read the retreat information sheet.
