Padmadarshini

I have long been interested in exploring and working with the body. Since being a teenager coming into my body through movement has been a way of connecting with and resourcing myself. I have taught yoga at Bodywise in Manchester for many years now. During this time both my personal practice and approach to teaching have ongoingly changed and evolved. It has been important to me to see the practice as a process of enquiry, exploration and creativity. My approach these days could perhaps be best described as Somatic Yoga. How I practice and teach tends to be quite slow, giving time and space and exploring sensations and returning to presence.

For some years now I have also been drawn to also exploring less structured somatic /embodied movement approaches - allowing movement to arise from listening to impulses within the bodymind rather than from an external form. In particular I love the practice of Authentic Movement, a little known but very rich embodied relational movement practice. It’s a bit like doing the metta bhavana through movement! Whether through movement or meditation I am really interested in discovering how the body can be a 'doorway' into listening to ourselves and can help us find a deeper, more open, easeful relationship to ourselves, others and the world around us.

living with uncertainty: exploring the bardos

-
Retreat Type:
Introductory

At times like these we might find ourselves with some uncertainty about ourselves and about the world. Everything around us seems to be shifting: structures of society, political directions of countries, and values that seemed to be long-established and firmly rooted. In this time, when solid ground seems scarce, we can look together at in-between states.

Who, and how, are we on shifting grounds? Who is ‘me’ when I do not recognize myself anymore? Tibetan tradition calls these experiences of in-between times, of gaps and transitions, ‘bardos’. Bardos describe what happens after our physical death, and the teachings are also concerned with impermanence, as we can observe it both in life and in death.

Taking the verses of the Six Bardos from the Tibetan Book of the Dead as a basis, we will explore how we experience moments of transition, in everyday life, in interaction and in meditation. We will look at themes like: How to be with loss? What happens when the old (me) dies? Who is this ‘I’ that is present, even when identity is absent?

Easy physical improvisational exercises will help us to become more present, and open to more light and joy. This will enrich our attention within and outside of meditation with the spirit of discovery. On this retreat we will apply what we notice in the physical experience straight to our meditation.

This retreat is suitable for complete beginners to meditation as well as being an ideal refresher for those who already have some experience. No experience of movement is required, only a willingness to explore your experience of movement in the body you are living in. For more information, read the retreat information sheet.

This retreat is the fruit of Padmadarshini and Inalu's shared interest and personal explorations over many years working with the body in movement, stillness and touch.

Each day we will explore how the body can be a 'doorway' into listening to ourselves and take us into a deeper, more open and easeful relationship to our experience. We will offer guided and improvised movement explorations, sometimes with music, solo and sometimes with a partner, which may include hands-on touch.

We will also introduce the practice of Authentic Movement, an embodied relational movement practice - which can be like the metta bhavana (loving-kindness meditation) as a movement practice. In a relational field the practice invites us to deeply attend to the body's impulses and follow this expression in movement. In this practice, life becomes more spontaneous, creative and more deeply personal, as we allow ourselves to become authentic to our own nature and to be witnessed as we truly are.

The retreat is suitable for people who have been on retreat before and have a regular meditation practice. Each day there will be meditation and free time, as well as periods of silence. No experience of movement or bodywork is necessary, simply a willingness to explore your embodied experience within the body you are living in.
