Picture of Sunatha

Hello! My name's Sunatha, and I'm a happy protector (that's what my name means in Pali and Sanskrit). I'm a recently ordained member of Triratna, actively involved in my centre in Newcastle. I also work in chaplaincy, and am a handy-man!

The Great Outdoors is a place I enjoy spending time in, retreating to the wilds of north-west Scotland, as well as exploring the ex-industrial hinterlands of the north-east of England. I think we find 'nature' everywhere, from the cracks in paving slabs in an inner-city estate, to the wild edge of the seashore. Buddhism helps me open to all this life, and help care for it too.

going deeper - winter's path: walking and nature awareness

-
Retreat Type:
Introductory

A new winter version of our popular nature and walking retreats. The landscape of the glen in winter, bare and dramatic, has an elemental beauty and you'll experience how connection with nature and landscape can support a more embodied and easeful approach to life. Watch our short film to hear about the transformative effect of walking retreats at Dhanakosa.

The retreat offers nature awareness practices and reflections to encourage a deepening relationship with the natural world, combined with guided walking in the landscapes around Dhanakosa. You'll also learn two traditional Buddhist meditations, giving you tools and practices that you can continue at home. We will also explore some Buddhist teachings to get a sense of how these might be relevant in modern life.

The retreat will include three days of guided walks, spread throughout the week. We will normally offer different walks on each of these days to suit a range of levels of fitness and experience. All walks are in the local area but some require a short drive to get to the starting point. For more information on the walks, recommended fitness levels and the appropriate clothing and footwear to bring, please read the retreat information sheet.

You can also watch our short video talking about the different types of walking retreat, guided walk options and what to bring with you.

An introductory retreat - no previous experience of meditation is assumed - the retreat is suitable for complete beginners, and can also be a good refresher for those who already have some meditation experience.

going deeper - awake in the wild

-
Retreat Type:
Going Deeper

Immerse yourself in nature this spring - stepping back from the pressures of everyday life and giving yourself time and space in the wild and beautiful landscapes surrounding Dhanakosa.

Discover how time in nature can support a deepening of meditation and Buddhist practice - encouraging a sense of aliveness in a living world and reflecting core teachings of impermanence and inter-connection.

In this retreat we take our meditation practice outdoors - awakening our senses to the different elements of the surrounding landscape and cultivating a deeper sense of connection with ourselves, others and with the natural world. We will explore how our relationship with nature, landscape, and the elements can support a more embodied and easeful approach to life.

Going Deeper retreats are an ideal first regulars’ retreat. They are suitable for anyone who has already done an introductory retreat or who has been regularly attending their local Triratna centre and wants to take things deeper. For more information, read the retreat information sheet
